about me
GEt TO KNOW ME
At aged 38, after many years in the events industry , I decided I needed to follow my true passion, to support those with neurodiversity. I have worked in both special and mainstream provision, have had the opportunity to support many amazing children and adults, and gain experience from industry professionals. Since 2017, I have owned and run Spectrum SEN Services, providing therapeutic, advocacy and mentoring services for all ages . I have worked tirelessly to build my qualifications and CPD portfolio, to keep them in line with my practical and lived experience.
Whilst my change in profession may seem unusual, it was very much a conscious decision , born from personal experience. In 2012, my son was diagnosed aged 8 with Autism, ADHD and Sensory Processing Disorder. More recently , in 2022, my teenage daughter was diagnosed with attention deficit disorder and Specific Learning Difficulties. In addition to this , at the ripe old age of 46, I was diagnosed with ADHD and Autism, which provided clarity to many unanswered questions, and a clearer understanding on how to keep myself mentally healthy . It is this deeper level of understanding , along with being a SEN parent, and working in education , that enables me to truly understand and advocate for my clients.
In the early days, especially prior to my son’s diagnosis, I felt isolated and frustrated by the lack of support available. I felt many emotions – angry, apprehensive, sad and unprepared for the journey ahead. Most of all, I felt frustrated and patronised as my concerns were disregarded. The education system was not designed to bring out the best in my child, in fact, caused excessive anxiety resulting in an inability to reach his true potential . Medical practitioners could do little more than redirecting me to websites and offer leaflets, and family and friends – whilst well-meaning- didn’t fully understand.
I now have the opportunity to offer support and make a difference, hopefully preventing others from similar feelings. I can now share my experience , personal journey and most importantly, stories of positivity and success.
My intention is to ensure that those with neurodiversity thrive. To feel heard, not ignored, and to know someone truly understands and can help.
